The Awards Evening hosted by Ashford College was a great success. Six schools took part – Ashford School, Ashford College, Homewood, Highworth, John Wallis Academy and Norton Knatchbull. All images entered into the competition were on view and made a most impressive display. 381 images both colour and monochrome were entered by students, divided into under 16’s and 16 & over, and comprising Artistic Interpretation, Landscape, Natural History, Photo-Journalism, Pictorial and Portraiture. It was clear that all the students had thoroughly enjoyed themselves when out with their cameras, and it was good to see so many families attending the evening to see the winners receive their trophies.
Sue Chapman ARPS CPAGB (a KCPA provisional judge) gave all the winning images a careful critique, and explained why they stood out from the rest. "How refreshing and different it was to see so many images without the normal boundaries of adulthood imposed on them! Young minds have open-ended ideas and no parameters to hold them back at this early stage in their photographic journey. Selecting a first, second and third in each category was no easy task and although some of the categories had a very clear winner, many did not and hard choices had to be made."
We couldn’t run the competition without our sponsors, and Jane Heyburn from Givaudan, the sponsors of the competition has emailed: “ Givaudan are delighted to be able to sponsor the Ashford Photographic Society's schools competition and it was my pleasure to present the awards to the very talented students. I always find the evening very interesting and inspiring.”
We are delighted to be able to give this opportunity to the schools to compete with their photography, and look forward to another successful competition next year. Hopefully, some of these photographers will be future members of Ashford Photographic Society.
