Paul Sanders - Landscape and fine art photography

Report courtesy of Marjorie Burge.

On Friday 4th May our speaker was Paul Sanders SWPP Gold, a professional photographer, specialising in landscape and fine art photography, running workshops, writing for magazines, and, happily for us, talking about his photography to clubs. Photography started early for Paul, secretly 'borrowing' his father's camera, and never looking back. His career in news photography started with four years covering Europe, and then becoming Picture Editor of The Times, looking after photographers in war situations and studying 20,000 pictures each day. After eight stress-filled years, Paul moved away from newspapers and began his journey into landscape photography. Joe Cornish influenced his initial approach, but true enjoyment only came after his realisation that he should take his own path, do whatever he wanted, and please himself. Photography for Paul is therapeutic - an emotional and spiritual experience. No Photoshop (spend time with your camera, not with your computer), no colour, everything in black and white because that is how Paul sees the world. Paul's advice? You have to be immersed in the moment (and Paul will take all day to find that perfect moment), experiment, don't follow others, stop trying to please, be creative, spend time getting it right – its not about technical perfection, it is about the moment. Paul's lovely moody landscapes, city buildings, street photography, and beautiful line and pattern images showed that this is indeed how Paul approaches his own photography. See his website at Such a good speaker, sharing so much with us, making us laugh, and reminding us all the time that photography should be fun. Another really good APS evening.

Next Friday, 11th May, we hold our final competition of the year, when Ian Stone DPAGB BPE1* and Marie-Laure Stone EFIAP(P) DPAGB, will be judging our Annual Exhibition print competition. Visitors welcome.

We meet every Friday at Givaudan Sports and Social Club, Kennington Road, Ashford TN24 0LT starting at 7.30, with coffee and bar facilities. We break for summer recess at the end of May, so only a few meetings left this season, but still time for visitors and new members to come along and see what we do.  We are a very friendly club with photographers of all levels; tuition is given at workshops for members and on club outings members can team up to gain experience. You are welcome to come along as a visitor, talk things through and make some friends, before making that final decision. Find out all about us at or telephone our secretary Katrina Devenport on 01303 814842 if you have any questions.
