Opening night

Report by Marjorie Burge.

A happy gathering of photographers on Friday 7th September to start our new season, with lots to catch up on, subs to be paid, new members to be welcomed and everyone settling back into ‘normal’ life for an APS Friday. Our Chairman gave special thanks to Karen Saunders for the excellent handbook, and Chris Shore, President and Competition Secretary, was able to present awards to members who had missed the May Awards Evening.

For the second half of the evening three of our own photographers treated us to a presentation of their work. Karen Saunders had some excellent wildlife prints, taken in South Africa, a deep knowledge of the animals, and some wonderful background stories, and, by contrast, some ballet dancers in Oxford Street. Chris Shore, showed us mono darkroom prints of the sea, breaking into colour for a sunset and still life, and then some beautiful loitering manikins. His photography is full of memories and stories, and he reminded us that entering competitions isn’t all about winning, its about trying, having a go, enjoying your photography. Philip Hinton says we must remember that we are all artists when taking our pictures. He brings his art college background into all his prints, using textures and collages. Showed some excellent street photography and portraits. Stressed that in studio photography everything is within the photographer’s control, and in street photography people who dress up for events are happy to be photographed.

Next Friday, 14th September, Polina Plotnikova ARPS EFIAP will be showing and talking on Flower Portraits and Still Life. Polina, a Russian-born UK-based photographer, has developed her own personal style from her love and knowledge of art, creating ‘artistic, inspiring, contemporary’ images. Have a look at her images on her website, and then come along on Friday and meet with her in person. This will be a good evening, and ideal for visitors.

We meet every Friday at Givaudan Sports and Social Club, Kennington Road, Ashford TN24 0LT starting at 7.30, with coffee and bar facilities. We are a very friendly club with photographers of all levels; tuition is given at workshops for members and on club outings members can team up to gain experience. You are welcome to come along as a visitor, talk things through and make some friends, before making that final decision. Find out all about us at or telephone our secretary Katrina Devenport on 01303 814842 if you have any questions.
