Polina Plotnikova ARPS EFIAP

Report by Philip Hinton.

On Friday 14th September, our first speaker of the new season was Polina Plotnikova ARPS EFIAP - a member of Beckenham Photographic Society. Polina, a multi-award winner who studied fine art at Moscow University, was also an archivist for the Tate and now lives and teaches in the UK. Her knowledge and love of fine art has influenced her photographic style. Using old masters as a starting point she produces in her home studio exquisite studies of flowers and classic still life. Even in her more modern and contemporary work you can still see the fine art influences.

The club’s new projector allowed us to view in fine detail the delicate shades of white in the flowers in her white-on-white project, and we could appreciate her meticulous attention to composition as she showed us photographic notes to let us see how she achieved her impressive photographs. This was a wonderful start to our new season.

Next Friday, 21st September, is our first Club Night when APS members Zuzanna Valla and Phil Drury will be showing their photography and sharing their secrets of success behind a camera – Zuzanna on portraiture, Phil on Nature. An ideal evening for visitors to find out who we are and what we do.

Our new projector and a change in the sizing rules for PDIs has meant that the deadline for entering our 1st PDI competition has been extended to Sunday 23rd September. This will encourage new members to enter, and be good news for some older members who haven’t noticed how rapidly the season moves once it has started.

We meet every Friday at Givaudan Sports and Social Club, Kennington Road, Ashford TN24 0LT starting at 7.30, with coffee and bar facilities. We are a very friendly club with photographers of all levels; tuition is given at workshops for members and on club outings members can team up to gain experience. You are welcome to come along as a visitor, talk things through and make some friends, before making that final decision. Find out all about us at www.ashfordps.org.uk or telephone our secretary Katrina Devenport on 01303 814842 if you have any questions.
