PDI theme

Report by Marjorie Burge

On Friday 7th December, Paul Parkinson LRPS CPAGB of Aperture Woolwich Camera Club, on his first visit to APS, was judge for our PDI Theme Trophy Competition. There was a good entry and all our photographers had taken great care in putting their images together, some with a story, all with a connection, covering wildlife, wild water, walking with dinosaurs, groynes, hairspray, and many imaginative images captured from walks and holidays. Our judge was quite severe when eliminating some of the entries, and although this has to be done to hold back the best, it must have been quite disheartening to be so summarily dismissed. He wanted more power and diversity, more contrast and energy, and although he expected use of Photoshop, especially to tidy up blemishes, he didn’t want to know that it had been used – quite hot on halos. Some sets fell down on just one image which he felt upset the balance of the others – quality above quantity - and some were simply overtaken by stronger images. Out of the twenty entries, Paul held seven back for special mention, explaining carefully why he liked them, what he felt would have improved them, and what it was about the final three that made them winners. A good evening of photography and judging at APS.

The winner of the Theme Trophy was Martin Till with Big Cats, with Sue Chapman in second place with Wooden Textures, and Richard Nutter in third place with Red Squirrels.

All placed themes can be viewed on the results page.

Next Friday, 14th December, we will have Roger Hance BPE5* FRPS AFIAP showing his photography under the title ‘The More I Practice the Luckier I get’. Visitors always welcome.

We meet every Friday at Givaudan Sports and Social Club, Kennington Road, Ashford TN24 0LT starting at 7.30, with coffee and bar facilities. We are a very friendly club with photographers of all levels; tuition is given at workshops for members and on club outings members can team up to gain experience. You are welcome to come along as a visitor, talk things through and make some friends, before making that final decision. Find out all about us at ashfordps.org.uk or telephone our secretary Katrina Devenport on 01303 814842 if you have any questions.
