Talk by Roger Hance

Report by Marjorie Burge.

On Friday 14th December, we were delighted to welcome Roger Hance BPE5* FRPS AFIAP, a member of Ipswich and District Photographic Society, showing his photography under the title ‘The More I Practice the Luckier I get’. Roger is an enthusiastic speaker, eager to share his knowledge and pass on everything he has learned during his many years in photography. Natural history seems to be his first love with sport a close second, and his secret is to ‘know your subject’. Catching birds, snakes, insects, hedgehogs and anything in the wild means learning when they are at their best, so you need to be an early riser – he even knows how to talk to red grouse on the Scottish Moors! We saw some beautiful images taken in nature parks where the animals have adjusted to people and don’t take fright. Roger applied the same rule to sport ‘you must learn the rules of the game’ to get the best images, and where to stand to make sure they are coming towards you – lots of strong images. He relies on choosing the right lens for the moment, using extremely high iso, fast shutter speeds, motor drive, auto focus, shooting in raw. Roger is sponsored by Permajet and gave advice on the advantages of different papers. We were able to handle his prints so could see for ourselves, particularly with the textured art. It was a full evening, so much covered, you really had to be there to take it all in. Check out his website to find out more of his photography. Why not become a member of APS so that you can see all this first hand? Half subscription available now to the end of the season.

Next Friday, 21st December is a members only APS Christmas Social, with scrumptious nibbles and a mind-boggling quiz. We will be back to being serious again on Friday 4th January when Cherry Larcombe ARPS EFIAP DPAGB will be judging our 2nd Print League Competition. Visitors always welcome.

We meet every Friday at Givaudan Sports and Social Club, Kennington Road, Ashford TN24 0LT starting at 7.30, with coffee and bar facilities. We are a very friendly club with photographers of all levels; tuition is given at workshops for members and on club outings members can team up to gain experience. We are half way through the season now and new members need only pay half a sub to take them to the end of our season. You are welcome to come along as a visitor, talk things through and make some friends, before making that final decision. Find out all about us at ashfordps.org.uk or telephone our secretary Katrina Devenport on 01303 814842 if you have any questions.
